[SUGGESTION] Disallow Vulgar Character Names

Post by Salest »

SUGGESTION: Do not allow any new character creations with common vulgarity in their names.

PROS: The Shard will be a bit more friendly to the eyes.

CONS: Some of our younger and/or immature players may cry.

This would require a shard rule change:
Reasonable character names are encouraged but not required.
I personally don't care about vulgarity in general. I use it often. However, I don't want to see more McFuckface, MotherfuckerCunt, Niggerfaggot, i love fat cocks, bitchtits, or any other clever names people come up with. It's just tacky all around.

F*ckmuppet is the greatest, what exactly is that?? But as stated above, a prefix would have make it alot cooler, that guy should shoot for over 10,000 Fame.

I do think an era-accurate name policy would be good. I'm not sure how limited we are here, because I've never tried to make vulgar named characters here, but I know on some free shards I've seen just about everything when it comes to character names

Disallow them, I believe we have children playing here too...

Whow! Some of those names are actually quite offensive. I don't take any personally, but if I where a devout Jew playing here, I'd be seriously offended by "Fucking Jew" for instance.

Perhaps not put in a name policy for when creating characters, but instead have staff review all newly created character names. There can't be THAT many names to scroll through each day. Make a generated list every day, and just scroll through it. That way, non offensive names go through the creation process, without any problems even if they contain parts of offensive words in their names.

I agree with this suggestion completely. Just within the last three days I have seen an increase in this type of character naming.

Haha, well, that's probably not offensive, I'd say more prejudicial.

I wouldn't consider it offensive, but if it'd be "a Niggah", yeh, that's something I would consider to be offensive, not to me personally, but perhaps for others.

Most Jews have very thick skin. They aren't as put off as you might think by the incessant anti semitism they confront in online gaming. But more importantly, the real reason you don't see a naming policy here is because its just too much work to enforce. Trying to make sure every name on the server is inoffensive to anyone is a full time job and its really much easier to just let it go.

This is and has always been a mature game. If your children are playing here that is your responsibility, not Derrick's. Stop shifting your job to other people.

To be honest, I couldn't care less myself, but when confronted with the option on taking action against inappropriate names or not, I choose the first.

If it would somehow be a betch for the staff to go through all the names looking for inappropriate and/or offensive names, I hereby announce my service. All I require is a list of all character names and I'll go through them all. And to keep the standard, I would be glad to go through a list of all new character names once a week.

I don't think that people have a right not to be offended, as we all have a right to our opinions, however I think allowing these names which apparantly have no value other than trying to draw a negative reaction from other players does nothing positive for the shard. If anything it detracts from the game play and casts a poor light on the administration.

Proposed solution? Scan the name list and change such names to a random NPC name.

Players should be warned about the new name policy and repeat offenders, after a direct warning, should be banned.

Why so harsh? Why no warning and why shouldn't these players get to choose their new name? Because by choosing such a invalid name to begin with one begged for a reaction.

Double negative much, lol.

Heres my solution, change them to something even stranger osi style.

Niggerfaggot = HappyCamper

McFuckface = McFunFace

MotherfuckerCunt = MotherLovingRunt

i love fat cocks = i love fat hens

I Poop On Girls = I Poop On Toilet

an anal squirrel = an anal retentive suirrel ( to long?) an friendly squirrel

Its even sicker when you know what the original was lol.

Would this really be a difficult thing to do simply chaning all the names you come across, or reviewing all the new characters?

Well, like I said, if the staff is short of man-hours to go through a list, I'd be happy to, and also continue to do it once a week. But either way, I think it's something that needs to be done imo.
