Re: Server Dead
I don't know, when I think about all the hours I put in earning gold to buy out the houses I wanted just to get it all flushed down the crapper by a server wipe, it kinda bums me out.
But you know I'm one of those people, I don't frkn care if Vega owns 15 castles or whatever. Cuz it doesn't affect me.
Newbs don't have anything to complain about. It's not like there's a real estate bubble. My gosh, there is a small for sale right beside Britain for 1x Deed in the housing forum. I dumped a housing site on Moonglow today by the mageshop, free for the taking. Towers are selling for less than 2x Deed. I mean come on!

Re: Server Dead
I mean you want to talk about era-accuracy, I remember warring with multiple guilds over a single small house site at that time. People pay real cash on ebay. How does this market of free to cheap small spots and 2X Deed for larger buildings even come close to comparing to *that*?
It doesn't.
Housing is not the problem here. You couldn't come on in era and get a house right off the bat, no you had to fkn WORK for it, even FIGHT for it. Now, a newb could lumberjack himself into a new small in a week easily. If anything, it's WAY TOO EASY to acquire housing.
I get that there's a loss of a sense of community ppl attribute to individual players owning so many houses, but we don't have the kind of population where you'd have a bunch of active neighbors anyway, so it makes no difference.

Re: Server Dead
heh it's funny, I go through entire areas where 1-2 guys are active out of 10 mid/large houses but every single one of my neighbors play and I didn't know them until I lived next to them.

Most of the shard is great - the only problem I found is lack of population in a lot of areas of the world.. to blame this on current players is ridiculous though. I think the culprit is lack of changes, as someone said, just staying in T2A-era is like being stuck in some sort of weird limbo. Imagine if the admins posted a new flashy trailer every so often for their latest "publish" (that somehow doesn't break T2A-style
), I could see more people signing up and playing looking forward to that cool stuff.
I wouldn't mind making a server like that myself actually, T2A-style, but gradually add more items, worlds, skills even.

The shard is 99.9% done. There will never be enough changes to advertise.Roden wrote:Most of the shard is great - the only problem I found is lack of population in a lot of areas of the world.. to blame this on current players is ridiculous though. I tried online StarCraft a few times... The players think they are something special, hate anyone not on their level, and talk constant shi....Capitalist wrote:StarCraft

Re: Server Dead
I did a few seasons of PGL back in 2000 or so, I was a decent BW player, though nowhere near the real pro level. My APM never got above 200, I was 150-180. I did have a few decent games against great players though. I also had a fucking awesome 2s partner that lived in the Philippines, was good times.
SC players can be pretty irritating though, you are right. Got sick of playing at a high level because you needed to practice 8+ hours a day and casual 2s or 1v1 was ruined by the prevalence of maphackers.
SC and SCII are great games

It's a dog eat dog game. You're either good or you're the "other" people (fans). Same applies to almost any game, but SC is extreme in every aspect. Mechanically, strategically, fans, etc. PGL was a proleague, do you mean PGT? (PGTour)

Re: Server Dead
Sorry it's been 15 years or so, and I quit brood war back in 2004 or 2005. I did a few seasons of PGT, but very infrequently (my then girlfriend, now-wife HATES starcraft with the fire of a thousand suns). I did one season of PGL, the pro gamers league, back in 1999 or 2000 and I think I lost every game but 1 or 2 and I never played anyone really good; I'm not sure if I ever finished the season. This was the days of Boxer and his terran juggernaut (not sure how long you've been playing SC). My handle back then was Gemini something or other and I had a decent amount of replays on battlereports.com
Battlereports.com was the site we all used way back when before replays, observer maps were the norm along with sites with tons of replays. People used to grab screenshots and write long reports of games with funny commentary. It later became host to tons and tons of replays to watch too. If you've been playing since BW or vanilla you probably have heard of it.
I played with a lot of Team Liquid people back in the day too, and lots of Korean/Chinese/Filipino friends. Back then, it was the only way to get really good games on bnet. We'd get on USA West or try the international servers. I'd play from midnight till sometimes 9am (to play with people across the world) then go to school or work and sleep after.
I also used to use tons of training maps to work on micro, macro, and just get faster APM in general.

Re: Server Dead
I'm well aware of what you're talking about. I played PGT/WGTour as well. I got good playing on West as a student in [fOu] clan. Anyone who doesn't play BW or didn't hates BW. It's the most in depth game ever made.
Edit: I recognize your name from TL, if you are indeed that same guy. 04-05... did you try BrainClan as well? That has been my favorite server to date.

Re: Server Dead
haha that rings a bell, and damn now I wish I had my old computer files handy. I had tons of replays on one of them and it would be a blast to watch some. I sometimes wish I'd really pushed to play seriously, though the only way back then seemed to be to move to South Korea. There was one American that did that, if memory serves. Some guy with the handle Everlast moved over there and went pro.
The Team Liquid guys were great. I had some nice games with Liquid~Drone aka Eriador, he was one of the better players I remember beating. I think I was 3-2 against the guy (back in 2001 or 2002 maybe) It's weird the things I remember, for example I remember beating him on the map River Styx and a ZvP on good ole Lost Temple. Of course he got way way better years later.
I also swear that I did the terran sci vessel 'eraser' before I ever saw it on a replay. I'm sure you know this one: take 2+ sci vessels, have them all irradiate each other and run them over bio units. I remember I sent my army to help my 2s partner, then my base had a huge host of zerg decide to drop in uninvited. The idiot must have just attack moved 100-150 supply of ground units (lings/hydras/lurkers/ultras) and I flew my vessels back, irradiating each other then just dissolved most of his army. Ah, good times.
Very strange how many games I can remember like that, haha

Re: Server Dead
Yeah. A few Americans went to Korea. The Polish were the first to invade Korea. When I had the option to go to Korea, I opted to stay here because I was young and lacked the seek for adventure that my peers had. When you mentioned Eriador I immediately thought of this... so I searched both of our names on TL (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/brood-w ... gner-style)... trying to find the grudgematch he and I had a couple of years ago... I'll edit.

If it's "done" then the shard will have to reinvent itself somehow to create interest. Or it will just continue as its going for a few more years before who knows what.GuardianKnight wrote: The shard is 99.9% done. There will never be enough changes to advertise.
