Why are people selling crafted items or resources so low?

Post by Daolin »

Occasionally I see people selling ridiculously low. To the point where they are making barely any profit. What is the point? There are plenty of buyers out there that will purchase goods at a respectable price. Its as if their marketing scheme is to completely undercut all prices and then people will finally buy from them. Its not even a matter of supply and demand most of the time. There is often plenty of demand to sell some items, but people still try to see if they can undercut everyone else. What is the point?

I realize the crafting problem is already an issue because every tom dick and harry out there has their own 7x crafting mule. You can't sell for a decent price because it comes down this rule: The price must be low enough so I don't just make it myself. This makes it difficult to be a crafter on this server.

I know this is all coming down to people having too many accounts, too many character slots. People want to be completely self-sufficient so they don't have to interact with others. Just a sense of anti-community.

Ahwell, things will never change I suppose. /rant

I use to make over 150k a week profit just by buying out 2 "super cheap vendors' and reseling their wares at my rune library and a few other locations.

It took me 10 minutes a day to stock my vendors - gotta love people who charge 99gp for a GM weapon that can easily sell for 150-250gp.

many peopel you see selling really low prices have just gmed their crafting skill.
They have aton of resources left over and dont actually plan on running a vendor. They open a vendor and sell their stuff super cheap until they are out of resources and never stock again.
Best suggestion is do what roadkill does, buy/sell their stuff for profit.

Theres 2 reasons for this.

1) People don't open vendors as a way to make money in this game. People treat a vendor with wares as something like GMin'g magic. They do it so they can say, hey, I GMed magic today and opened a vendor, I win at UO.

2) There is so much thieving go around on this server that someone who gets something for nothing, or at least only the skill it takes to steal it, doesn't really care what price he gets for the stolen item. He can afford to sell his stolen Keg for 5k even though it should be worth 15.

Really, it would be nice to put some price structure into play, but there would always be some asshat around to go lower, and personally im guilty of it as well. Also, price something too high, and people just decide to make their own craftsman with one of their extra accounts. Sometimes I sell something lower than everyone else because even though I know I might not make a profit on that one item, they will buy other items that might be pure profit to me. So yeah, you can make money in the vending game, but it isn't the same as the real T2A.

I sell my GM weapons at 100 each for a couple of reasons. The obvious is as a means to draw people to my shop. The only item I technically 'lose' money on is halberds (assuming a 6gp/ingot overhead), but when people say "100 gp hallys" you'd be amazed how many people will at least check your shop. I make my money on kegs and magic items.

I also do it so even a complete newbie with their 100 starting gold can buy a GM weapon and get to killing deer/graveyard spawn/etc, something I always do as a new player.

I'll be honest, too, sometimes it comes back to bite me, because someone (maybe its you, RK!) may buy all the weapons at once. I hate smithing/stocking en masse.

i poison my GMs for free and still cant sale anything. I am about to have to close down my weapons/armor vendor. About the only thing that really sells in my shops are Tmaps but those take forever to farm.

Or everyone could stop making their own crafters and enjoy the cheap prices the market has to offer.

This goes back to account limits and AFK macroing. People macro making 100s of weapons so it's no effort/no problem to sell it at the smallest profit. They can just set this up and go play UO on their other account. When crafting actually took effort from the user, then the pricing was justified.

Personally, I can't be bothered to try and make more money than I'd get from a trip around the world to vendors after crafting items. I'm content with having enough to get what I want/need. Money's never been an issue.

Then again, I'm a patient player whose willing to put in the effort behind doing that and killing stuff until I have enough for a nice place (which I haven't gotten yet).

Buy a separate house to put in a vendor on a community of less than 450 people? No thanks.

Maybe if that # hits around 1K I might change my tune

*Cue selling gold and killing mobs until I buyz my Brick House.*

I primarily play a merchant in UO and my vendor shop is now to the point where I get about all the business I can handle, and so far, I only have three characters that I actually play. People on this shard definitely do want to buy things from other players. You just have to provide something unique, or run an exceptional shop, or be willing to do the things that they aren't, because they would take too much time for someone who is a PVP or PVMer first and only has a vendor as a means of dumping their loot or getting rid of the stuff that they made when they were GM'ing their mules. You also have to be shameless when it comes to getting the word out about your shop.

There are two main differences between Second Age and the actual T2A era of UO. The first is that the perceived skill gain of the T2A era was much slower than it is here, because most of us didn't know how to power level our characters back then. I know I didn't. I had no idea back then that you could GM a smith in a couple of days as long as you had enough ingots, but I bet everyone playing Second Age today knows how to do that. There probably isn't a single player on this shard who is "bad at UO". The second is that most UO players didn't run multiple accounts, and thus were forced to interact with other players, and you couldn't have a mule gathering resources in one window while you actually played in another window. I would definitely be in favor of limiting players to one account each, if Second Age ever opted to go in that direction. Player interaction is a good thing, and so is giving crafting skills the value they deserve.

You can run a successful vendor on Second Age, though. Just do something different!
