there is a guy on the divinity forums that is updating all the orginal music to sound like real instruments. the samples are really good. Hes still working on it but as soon as he publishes it I will add a link to it.

Thanks for the link to those midis storm. I've been looking for those for a while!

I've been collecting bits and pieces of old computer game music recently. One of the games I first played on the old Apple IIe was Ultima IV! I then went back and played I and III (I couldn't find II). A few years later, my brother and I were so excited to discover Ultima VII was being released, we went into the store and cunningly copied down the answers to the copy protection questions so we could play our pirated copy of the game. Ahhhh the memories... I've gone back to Ultima VII a few times over the years, these guys here: http://exult.sourceforge.net/ have produced an application which helps running Ultima VII under XP.

Soooooo anyway, back to music. I've always been fond of Stones, and noticed when I first started playing UO that many of the other tracks in it also harked back to the old single player Ultimas. Luckily some helpful chap called Simon Quinn over at Exult recorded the Ultima VII music into ogg files using a Roland MT-32 (an old soundcard with a damn nice midi table). I was always rather fond of the Ultima music (apparently Stones first appeared in Ultima V - http://ultima.wikia.com/wiki/Stones ) but I didn't like some of the new tracks from the later versions of UO. I've since replaced much of the music from my UO client with Ultima VII music. Simon Quinn's Ultima VII recordings are available here:
http://exult.sourceforge.net/download.php
Most soundcards these days still have crappy midi tables (especially the onboard ones) so unless you've got an expensive soundcard, your PC will probably play the old UO midis at pretty average quality. If you want a slightly nicer version of the same files recorded from an MT-32, check out the above link.

I've also edited my config.txt file to stop looping the songs as I found UO annoyingly loops them forever. If you want to stop that from happening, just edit your config.txt file in your: "Ultima Online Mondain's Legacy\Music\Digital" folder (this folder may be different depending on your client). Just delete the loop word off the end of any lines where you don't want the music to loop. I've also used Audacity ( http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ ) a jolly handy open source sound editing application to make some of the tracks slightly longer (say 3 or 4 times repeat instead of looping forever)

I've also recently come across this guys page: http://www.grandgent.com/tom/ultima/ He's got MT-23 recordings of the midi music from the single player Ultimas as well as some of the tracks from the original UO. He's added a digital reverb which sounds even more fancy then the ones posted on sourceforge.

Well said!

To be honest I was considering the same thing, lol! There's quite a community of people archiving old computer game music these days. There's even people generating original music and remixing in 8 bit sound. Wikipedia have some good links if you're interested in looking for more classics. I'm still trying to find the Bubble Bobble music... :)

http://www.ocremix.org

Over 3000 free MP3s of game music remixed from a wide community of artists. Not sure if you'd call that original or not since it's the core melody and whatnot, but eh. Some is pretty exceptional.

Sweet! They've got four remixes of the bubble bobble music! Thanks for the link silex.

EDIT: Hmmm, the bubble bobble remixes are OK. I'd really like the original though! Can someone post back here if they manage to find a good archive for the original game music. These guys have a reasonable amount: http://www.vgmusic.com/

Sorry Derrick for wandering off topic as usual. :)

EDIT 2: Sweeeet. I found Bubble Bobble at vgmusic. I was looking in the wrong place. Man, this is like the best 8bit song ever! Hehe! Most of the classic stuff is in the Commodore 64 section, although there's some goodies in the Amiga, Windoze, and Apple II sections too.
