Boat bug or part of game mechanics?
Boat bug or part of game mechanics?
It was my understanding (possibly mistaken) that a locked boat on waters were not boardable unless one has the key to said boat.
Today, I have witnessed a strange occurance, and would like to ask the members of UOSA for insight.
I was boatmining north of the minoc mines, when a Zaphod of The Tax Office guild brought his boat near mine, and recalled another character onto his boat to cast an EV onto my boat. This part, I can understand.
What happened next was, with the boat locked, Zaphod brought his boat in front of my boat, and somehow hopped onto my boat. Needless to say, all my ore was subsequently moved to his boat.
Can somebody tell me how he was able to board onto my boat without a key nor my gangplank opened?
Thank you in advance.

Re: Boat bug or part of game mechanics?
The easiest explanation is that you had the boat key on your persons, he then scooted his boat close enough to loot you because your corpse was not in one of the safe zones, then he unlocked and hopped aboard.
If a boat is parked too close to the land, and the land is at the proper z-height, it is entirely possible to just walk right on it, without using the plank. It may be possible, that if your boats were in the perfect alignment, he simply walked right onto your boat, but I imagine that his boat would have to be higher on the z-axis than yours. This was done in real T2A by "flying boats". Which may or may not be possible here, (I highly doubt it is). Point is, always die on the safe tiles of your boat (in front of behind the mast in the center), and you should have no problem.

MatronDeWinter,
Thank you for taking the time to explain this.
Just to clarify, I would like to mention that the corpse did not have the key to the boat on himself. My boat was parked next to the mines, which were not possible to walk onto land.
Without the corpse having the key to the boat, would it had made a difference to die behind the mast? I ask this because the fellow didn't seem to recall onto the boat; instead, he just seemed to walk from his tip of the boat onto my tip of the dragon boat.

Re: Boat bug or part of game mechanics?
Well, unless your ghost opened the blank, if you didnt have the key that method would not work. However, the nose of the boat is the area you can walk on if the boat is too close to land, so I assume thats how he got on. But I did not thing a boat-boat transfer would work. Hence the old flying boat trick, which if that works here, would be a bit annoying to be honest. (And I'm all for stealing)esteban wrote:MatronDeWinter,

If I were to place the boat where it is completely surrounded by waters, I guess this would not have happened?
I'll learn to keep my boat "parked" where the surrounding has no land to avoid being stolen this way. Thank you for teaching me this possibility.
Sincerely,
Esteban
Thank you for this explanation. My boat was indeed clost to the Minoc North Boatmine "land". Perhaps this is how it happened. However, the nose of the boat is the area you can walk on if the boat is too close to land, so I assume thats how he got on.

Yeah, watch out for Zaphod, we had a little tussle, he's hassling the boat miners, keep your key in the hatch and your ore unreachable.
Re: Boat bug or part of game mechanics?
I personally don't mind the hassling, it's part of the game
I just wanted to know how he was able to hop onto my boat. I always recall off of my boat key in a secured container in a house.

I once had my boat, with its anchor down and completely locked, near cyclops valley. It was a few boat lengths away from shore. I recalled onto the key one day, to find it in multiple screens away, in the middle of nowhere. someone was able to board my boat and move it on me.

Might've been me. One side was locked, the other was not. I sailed it up north to explore since I didn't want to buy a boat.Kefka wrote:I once had my boat, with its anchor down and completely locked, near cyclops valley. It was completely locked. I never unlock my boats, I have zero reason to do so.hiicha wrote:Might've been me. One side was locked, the other was not. You can telekenesis bodies to open them from afar, and then recall to the key in the corpse.

I had a boat be moved on me the other day, left the key in the hatch.. I went to shore dbl clicked the hatch said "inaccessible" so i figured it was unopenable unless you're aboard.
