Im pretty sure when you attacked them they used to spawn a few friends to help them. Some sort of fighters/warriors.

People used to take them to dungeons, attack them in the entrance and leave, then let the fighters fight the monsters.

They actually implemented that in earlier UO:R days.

Everyone used to lure out the nobles, slaughter them, and loot an easy 700 gp or so.... But OSI noticed and nerfed it :)

Off topic:

The topic title is a bit mis-leading. For a second I had my hopes up that the thread was about Hookers in UO. =[. We have NPC Beggars, Warriors, Archers, Nobles, Sailors, Brigards, UO might as well have NPC Hookers as well. They would just talk dirty to you for an hour and charge like 1k gold.

I second the fact the hirelings defended themselves. Me being a evil person on Pacific, needed to keep my karma on the down low. Killing Nobles gave extreme karma loss, and were easy cash. The hireling patch came after T2A, one noble was worth 300-600 after you sold all his clothing, and his sword. I killed them outside Magincia every, since they spawned in front of my private door step. I think gems were added in UO:R to their loot table, in addition to the hirelings they summoned.

I am pretty sure Npc's spawning defenders was later. I remember starting on Napa after UO:R and killing and stealing from Npc's as a way to make money to start and at that time they did not spawn defenders. It was later after killing noble that defenders were put in to help with balance.

Well are we going to see nobles dropping more loot anytime soon? And giving extreme karma loss... Couldn't they take you to Dread?
