Resisting Paralyze

For ideas on how to make Second Age a better shard. Can it get any better? Maybe.

Resisting Paralyze

As a complete newbie two months ago, the very first person who tried to
pk me the same day I created the character started with a paralyze which
I resisted... at 50 resist. Surprised him so much, I managed to recall
away. :-)

I can add just one thing to the other helpful comments... my mage has nearly
(so close...)100 resist... I still only totally resist para 25% of the
time....
Actually, with 71 resist I resisted a paralyze cast by a Murderer Fredo
(14k on the Sonoma bounty board) in Shame level 1. Probably just a
freak occurrence though.
Umm....I resist para at least %40 of the time (resist 88)

The key is on how often
he can completely resist paralyze.
Didn't bother checking the demo scripts because it is far too late and also many of the earlier posts I read stated "don't worry, you will be able to resist this soon..it's coming" and then an early 99 post saying:

2) You are going to allow paralyze to be resisted. Well most of the PK
victims have lower levels of resist because they are not power gamers
who exploit Wind mage bugs. So, your paralyze change again favors the
PKers (with high resist) who will now be impossible to STOP and kill
using paralyze.
Read the HOC log, they plan to make Paralyze resistable. This is why I
wrote this whole thing. Faceless is making a lot of changes in favor
of PKs.

I thought resisting paralyze came in with the new Magic reflect changes in UO:R?

I thought this to.

Speaking of this.... Shouldnt you be able to stack RA and reflect? I thought that was something else that came in with the reflect changes. (The inability to stack)

I mentioned a long time ago about paralyze being resistable but had nothing to back it up besides memory... Kaivan shot that claim down like he normally did with my notions back then. When paralyze was resisted it showed an unusual animation outside of the norm that had large spread out particles similar to the healing animation. The majority of players had very low resist back then so it was very uncommon when it did happen.

its just a lvl 5 spell ... It should be resistible to some degree, if not a complete Resist then a shorter paralyze timer.

Para lasts 1/2 the duration when resisted. I wish there was something more specific on actual implementation of the resist changes for para in 1999. It seems like speculation before the change that it was going to be 100% resistible, but I don't see mention of that actually being the case.

Yes, RA and Reflect should stack. Do they not?

Out of curiousity... Why did we end up going with a reduction in the timer instead of an all out resist like other spells such as poison, mana drain, mana vamp, dispel, etc...?

Ill confirm when i am home but i dont believe they do. (unless someone on now wants to confirm)

I believe any combo of RA and MR will only have the MR being used. (in other words, ra will not work if you cast reflect...RA-MR or MR-RA.. order does not seem to matter).

You can cast them both and apply them both but im not seeing anything from the ra.

Ill confirm tonight unless someone beats me to it.

I remember looking into the extensively long ago. I can't off the top of my head say where the information on halfing the timer was found, but I'd appreciate seeing any evidence on either side of this.

I am thinking it may have derived from the debuff reduction in the timer when those spells are resisted.

my keywords were "ultima online" paralyze resist and I believe I only got through to the second page because I was so tired. There's definitely a ton more info on the google group alone.

My explanation of resisting paralyze still holds true to me for the way that I remember it. The chance of resisting the spell was very rare and when it did happen a very unusual sparkle effect was displayed resisting the spell entirely. This pretty much always caught any pvp'er off guard when this happened since in most cases the spell was used on a dexer and they would be charging full speed at you after the failed paralyze attempt. The worst cases when this happened on dexers was when you finally got the spell casted after being disrupted and taking over half damage for them to only resist the spell entirely and more than likely kill you after the failed attempt. However, resisting the spell was very rare even on a character with high resist. I am definitely not suggesting you go by this alone, but you can later quote me right "if" this evidence is ever found. :wink:
