A glimpse into the past: how it really really used to be
A glimpse into the past: how it really really used to be
Thought a few people might be interested to see these memories from a simpler UO.
The website is now offline but the wayback machine has got it stored.
http://web.archive.org/web/200706250542 ... s9/235.htm
It's got screenshots and a narration through the Alpha, Beta, and 1.0 release of UO. A great read -- and look at those Alpha pics!
Hope you all enjoy as much as I did.
(And if the pictures are broken, go to the wayback machine and try a different cache date, they're all there somewhere).

Very nice find. The Pre-Alpha ones look cool, wish I had been there.
I love the simplicity of the tournament area layout:

The old Terathan fort. The big ships have been taken out of the game later, as they caused too much trouble when moved.
Would be awesome to have ships like that now lol

Hmm... I find this quote interesting...
This has happened to me here where someone followed me around stealing my loot. This was in the area where he talks about release (1997) and then says OSI changed the loot policy a year or two later (1998, 1999). What did they change it to? Was it changed during T2A?That page... wrote: During the first year of UO the brave warrior often lost control when other players looted the monsters he had killed, although they did not contribute anything to the death of the creature. Dungeon were crowded with looters who were doing nothing but hanging around like vultures waiting for a good opportunity to snatch the gold out of dead monsters. The result was sad: If you only got near a player engaged in a fight, he would most likely threaten you as he saw in you the potential looter. After one or two years OSI finally changed the looting policy.

Though my memory is a bit foggy, I think there was a time a monster corpse would be blue to everyone but the person who killed it for a set amount of time (~2mins) if anyone did loot it they'd go grey.zzyzx wrote:Hmm... I find this quote interesting...

I could also be making this up in my mind.

That's because you are. There was never such a policy implemented. Feel free to suggest more methods to make sure you get your loot that never existed though. Thanks.poogoblin wrote:Though my memory is a bit foggy, I think there was a time a monster corpse would be blue to everyone but the person who killed it for a set amount of time (~2mins) if anyone did loot it they'd go grey.zzyzx wrote:Hmm... I like the pic with the ship, because it's labeled as "the old terathan fort". Nice try.. Terathans weren't around in Alpha, Beta or Early FInal Release.
