Interesting topic, here's my two cents...
I've seen a shard wipe in action, over on Angel Island. The shard was stagnant so they decided to do a shard wipe. I think after the shard wipe, we probably peaked at our current UOSA population, maybe a little higher. It was good for a short term boost. It did give the shard a shot in the arm, vets stuck around, new people came in. It was a level playing field... however the shot in the arm was only a temporary fix. The shard slowly dwindled away after months maybe. There was a time we were LUCKY to get even 30! people playing at the same time.... so for me to see 200+ people on a shard that is pretty awesome is nice.
After I quit forking over the money to play the OSI shards I went to End Effect... and I came in on the dying days apparently. I got pretty established, and I remember sitting in my player run tavern, just wishing that even 1 of the 5 players that still played would stop by lol.
So whats the solution? Probably not a shard wipe... it would be good for a short term boost (maybe) but you end up losing that longevity that many shards lack. I think maybe all these vets that have assloads of money should pour it into making a player town, recruit people to those towns via guild stone and do town wars, events, etc. Train people in pvp. Take a noob under your wing and teach them the ropes. Make a guild that goes beyond novelty titles that make you look good and make it with a purpose and a gimmick... like the Orcs and YEW Militia etc... make new ones with new purposes. Snatch up these new guys that happen across the shard and train them and take them in. I think that would go long ways in keeping people around.

I went to some other trammel server and killed a ton of afkers. I think I did my part to help bring players here.

Or you did your part to make them think they are hardcore. They probably had 10 noobs on their forums, writing a thread each on the forums about how hardcore the server is.. Just like we have here.

Crybabies usually aren't depressing. Rather, they're hilarious. You on the other hand, you're depressing.

I have the benefit of seeing the past and the present. Time and history can be very depressing.
You're welcome.

The solution is obvious.
Medlock, interesting you bring up Angel island... That was the shard I was referring to! Who were you on AI?

The number you see on your client when you connect is the number of clients connected. Take that number and divide by 3 and thats closer to the actual real person count. Well divide by 5 when IDOCS are plentiful, you get my drift.

Abyz- I was Hawk. As far as guilds go, I was in the Ta'kier guild or whatever they were, until they folded I guess. When I came in stuff was still active, I remember massive battles surrounding their headquarters in front of Despise.
Who did you play on there? I've noticed a few names from Angel Island but I think they've long since moved on at this point. I actually logged into AI a while back just to see if anyone was still around... zero population... no houses anywhere... it's a wasteland. Kind of sad

I was Abyz, Zyba, Grizz... I forget the rest! I ran around with Tj and Arthis mostly. I missed the glory days of AI, but I did learn to uo again on that fine server.
AI is an excellent custom UOR style server. The pvp was very well balanced, and it had a lot of great features. However, I despised the no mounts aspect, and I cannot go back to UOR style pvp snoozefest.
I've met quite a few former AI folks here on UOSA. There are a cpl still active, off and on.
Glad to see you here. UOSA is the highest quality free server going as far as mechanics and staff go, in my opinion. Being full on T2a era, it lacks in the content area, but overall is more fun. They could easily fix the content problem be reinstituting Derrics top quality automated events that brought UOSA great success. Right now it's a matter of pride and politics, but some of us are holding out hope that they will be back.
I'm off and on due to work/fam, but if I'm ever on IRC chat hit me up if you need anything.

Cool man. I vaguely remember the name Grizz for some reason. I actually prefer the T2a stuff compared to all the "non-Ultima" crap that EA/OSI gave people to squeeze more money out of the franchise. I hated logging in to see people on BEETLES and all of these other whacked out rides. Too many shiny things. Yeah I was a bit put off by the no mount thing in AI... I mean it was kind of cool until you had to haul ass across the map. I did like the "no recalling into dungeons" idea though... I would set a "trip wire" character that was partied to me in front of a dungeon entrance, and when the pk's would come rolling through and kill him, I'd get the "I just got killed by _____!!!" message in the party chat, which gave me plenty of time to hide and get out of there haha.
Apparently AdamAnt is still working on something over there. Some sort of automated quest system or something to that nature. But , i think all old accounts are gone though..

Just to echo Derrick's
statements from years past; a server wipe will never happen on this shard.
It pretty much flies in the face of the whole point of a MMORPG.
