Repair question

When i repair items with my smith does it restore them to 100% when sucessful, or does the item break down bit by bit per repair?

It reduces the item's max HP by a small amount (this typically is on the scale of between 30 and 110 HPs, and I think it reduces the total HPs by 1 or 2 depending on skill and/or how broken the item was) and then sets it's current HP to that max. So it has 100% of its HPs, but that number has gotten a little smaller.
