Carpet bombing, should there be limits to this?
My favorite passive aggressive hero has taken to littering my house on a daily basis, thousands of items in a chopbox fall into one tile. Lags me to hell. He did the same to mYm but now he is doing it with the help of his guild. I dont have the time to police nor the energy to setup a ban macro. I would lock door, but items will just be placed on my doorstep anyway.
Derrick has no policy in place for this, however he has stated in the past that placing several animals on one tile with the purpose to lag or crash is banable.
I see parallels here, because as the item count grows a character lags more and more as he moves to the point where they crash, and using scavenger with many items makes you crash.
Since our hero cannot fight fairly he resorts to passive aggressive griefing to break you, and such harassment needs addressing imo.
Some things to discuss if you agree that this should not be allowed:
How do you deal with it? Should in house decay be something that you can enable?
Could there be limits as to how many items can be placed on one tile?
Should chopping boxes filled with items not be allowed inside other peoples houses?
PS OMG SPELLING ERROR

A big question I have on this is the accuracy of the mechanic, both chopping boxes in other players houses, and also number of items on the same tile.
I don't personally recall this ever happening on OSI, but I may just have been sheltered.

You can only put 125 items in a box at a time, right?
I don't think lag is the issue here. I'm standing on the steps of a house with literally thousands of items in it right now - I would guess about 10,000 - and it didn't lag me one bit when I walked up to it. I'm guessing lag is a last-ditch lie to get people to stop griefing you, which is perfectly within the rules. Can I say that I "lag" whenever mym gates in with 6 people to PK me? Please ban this activity as well.
I don't think "I don't have the time" is a valid reason for making a rule change that's not era accurate. Nor is "I don't feel like making a macro".

As it turns out there may be a few things which are not accurate, one being number of items per tile, two being chop boxes.
Stay on topic.

Re: Capet bombing, should there be limits to this?
To add some perspective to this post. Felix has been having approximately 5 boxes with around 100 items each broken in his house each nite. This is drastically, drastically reduced from what was originally happening (2500+ items) cause of the lag it was causing. At this point he is just whining about being griefed.
I 100% for sure was able to break boxes with an axe on OSI. I don't particularly remember if the items all took up one z-axis spot or if they stacked though. Either way it wouldn't help out Felix's case. He's simply getting some of what he's dished to others thrown back at him and now crying about it.
PS: It's spelled CARPET not CAPET

Re: Capet bombing, should there be limits to this?
As best I remember, items from axed containers falling to the same z-level is accurate (in fact, I seem to remember this as an occasionally-seen area-denial tactic, though not through lag: dropping a hundred or so objects that can't be walked over on each tile could be used to effectively deny access to "walled off" areas for a limited time until the objects either decayed, or someone could live long enough to remove all of them from one tile).
But as stated, it wouldn't make a lot of practical difference whether they stacked or not. If anything, if they stacked, I think it'd just be even more grief-tastic...
And while I would generally applaud efforts to make felix's life miserable, I believe intentionally dropping hundreds or thousands of items in a small area for no practical purpose is just plain abusive to the server and all players who might pass through the area and should be discouraged.

Items only load in a house now if you walk on the steps. Latest patch fixed that.Teg wrote:And while I would generally applaud efforts to make felix's life miserable, I believe intentionally dropping hundreds or thousands of items in a small area for no practical purpose is just plain abusive to the server and all players who might pass through the area and should be discouraged.

Ah, right, sorry, dunno where my brain was. Carry on, then!Luca|Blight wrote:Items only load in a house now if you walk on the steps. Latest patch fixed that.

(Actually I'm still not wild about the precedent, I'd really rather not come home to such a disaster perpetrated by, say, felix.)

Stay on topic, please. Leave the PvP discussion for the Trash Talk forums.

Oh please stop crying that is what uo is all about you can do anything you want in this game don't try and turn it into some gay game like wow. Sometimes I think some of the era accuracy changes are half made up, second age era was a long time ago like ten years ago right? That many years can distort the memory, so I think it's especially difficult to try and make a "era accurate" change on something so small. Chances are if they are going the lengths to do what they are doing you most likely deserve it and caused it on your own. Crying about it on forums and trying to get admins to change game rules to your selfish desires is rather pathetic. And above all trying to do it in the name of "era accuracy". Nice try but I don't buy it at all.

I only read a few of the replies because since so many were in doubt that this would cause lag... Do people not remember anyone crashing within 2 screens of my tower (including staff) because everyone's favorite tamer guild decided to place 6000~ of the same item on one tile?
There is a patch note that relates to this. At no point should 2 items take up the same Z, I believe, and any time an item is added to the stack, the lowest is erased...something along those lines.

Off topic and inappropriate posts removed.
I think this is a valid discussion of mechanics, and it's not the result of only this particular series of incidents. The situation that hemperor described was a serious problem, and it's reasonable to make an inquiry into whether there's a mechanical deficiency on UOSA that allows this to happen. The question is should there be limits, not whether the incidents described met those limits.
In the case of the incident at Hemperors tower we did make mechanical changes to the server in order to reduce the risk of clients crashing from having too many items loading, this is reasonable beyond the limits of accuracy, because we do intend to be more stable the OSI was in 1999.

I am fairly certain Luca doesn't put the items there to crash/lag you. He puts them there so you have to clean them up.
I believe you once stated the reason you crashed was because you were using scavenger agent to try and clean up which crashed RAZOR, which then crashed UO.
Try cleaning up without RAZOR and let us know if you still crash.
