Tinker Traps?

I was under the impression that placing a chest on the ground then placing a trap on the container while it is still on the ground gives no murder counts. I have tested this 3x and every time i received a count. Am i doing something wrong?

Place box on ground
trap box
pic box up
place the box in a prime location
random player opens box
receive murder count
