Question about magic weapons and mage armor

Post by Lazarus »

I think I asked before in a thread about the tactics increase "accurate" weapons give you. I know at 100 tactic skill level you get a damage increase bonus but I asked if the additional skill you get from accurate weapons increase the damage increase bonus and I was told no, so whats the point of having "accurate" weapons? Or does it really do additional damage?

Also whats the best armor for a mage to wear? Tired of running around with only 5 AR.

You get a damage "bonus" for every ten points of Tactics. Technically, it's simply base damage; at 0 Tactics, you're only doing 50% of the weapon's base damage (before modifiers like Vanquishing and such), while at 50.0 Tactics you'll do base damage, and at GM Tactics you'll do 150% base damage (with 10% intervals in between). So it isn't just at 100.0 Tactics that you get the bonus.

As for the increase in Tactics, I would assume that it does additional damage (and it "feels" like it does), increasing its base damage by 10% for every ten points (maybe 1% per point, in the case of +5/+15/+25 Tactics bonuses). I don't know for certain, but it seems that way. All I know is, in concerns to "over 100 Tactics" modifiers is that you can't gain in Tactics if your skill goes over 100 due to magic items (i.e., don't train Tactics with Tactics bonuses).

As for magic armor, I'm not a mage, nor have I ever been. 50-60 Magery on this shard, after 12 years of playing, is the closest I've ever gotten. However, from what I've heard, leather is the only medable armor (not studded, and for post-AoS players, not bone either), and I believe it also hinders the rate at which you gain mana (hence why you don't see many mages in leather armor). The 10-15 AR from leather isn't worth the meditation penalty, if that's the case - especially with the high volume of magic-using opponents.

Hope that helps a little, and look forward to someone else coming along and lettin' me know for sure, myself, hehe.

Thanks Van for taking the time to post.

I only wear a robe, nice one really I got from dropping an evil mage lord and it has like 4 AR and I have some leather gloves and thats it, AR is like 5. Sometimes I cast protection and will have like 14 or so.

Hi there!

The tactics do add to your damage even above 100 if I'm not mistaken.

Here is the formula:

"FORMULA: % of Base Damage that is Dealt= Tactics + 50"

So with 100 tactics, with +50 = %150 base damage.

With 125 tactics (after equip magic weapon), that makes it %175 base damage.

So if the base damage of the weapon is 20, you do 30 damage with 100 tactics. With 125 tactics you do 35 damage.

As for armor and meditation: I did a little test on test server. I compared leather, studded, and plate chests (all female, though I doubt there is difference) w/ nothing on. Here are the results:

The time it takes to regenerate 40 mana from 60 to 100 passively is:
Naked: 0:45 = 1.1 seconds for 1 mana
Leather chest: 1:03 = 1.6 "
Studded chest: 1:32 = 2.3 "
Plate chest: 2:22 = 3.6 "

I had 100 int, 100 med, and 100 magery. Active med rates were roughly double (excluding plate). Each test wielded slight difference by a few seconds. GM med and plate chest was worse than 0 med and no armor.
