I ran into a dude in-game last night who said he was lagging due to being on dial-up. Said he was from Arkansas (insert Arkansas joke here).
I can't fathom surviving on this shard with dial-up. You'd think it would take all the fun out of the game, if almost everyone else playing has broadband.
When I started, in 1998ish, I was on dial-up and hated the lag and crashes, but at least it was a relatively level playing field. Sheesh.

i miss the modem connection sound, but holy shit.
dial up, really?
do people pay for that still? hahah.
you could probably save money with buying a nice yagi antenna.
the ones that cost $130 bucks are directional, and reach
about 4-5 miles out

Re: Dial-up
It's not dial up itself that is that bad. We weren't all lagging to shit in '99 because we were on dial up, it's just the internet was still improving, and it wasn't yet ready to handle the amount of traffic it was getting (ISPs, gateways and UO servers especially). Dial up will add a bit to your ping, but I used to get sub 100 connecting to Oceania (which is in Australia, I live in New Zealand) in early 2000. Consider that ping really doesn't affect your running speed on RunUO servers until you get to about 200+. It starts becoming a bit noticeable at 250+
For the most part, running 1 client will only be sending ~2kb/s or less, dial up can even handle many users on the same screen. Probably the biggest issue with their dial up NOW is that they are on a shitty provider.
