Hello, My name is Gaius Atrius. Pleased to meet you!

Post by Gaius Atrius »

Hello, everyone! As I said in the "subject" line, my name is Gaius Atrius.
I'm a modder for "The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind", hence the name.
(I use it on every other forum I frequent as well, so I used it here...)

I'm also a huge Ultima fan. (My favorite is Ultima VII.)
I've wanted to try UO for a long time, but never got the chance until now.

I played the game for the first time earlier today.
I wasn't sure about where to begin, so I tried playing as a Mage.
(You may have seen me fiddling about... My character's name is Alistair.)

I wasn't sure what to do, or how to do it, so I just fiddled around for a bit.
I'm still not quite sure how to play the game, but I hope to learn...
This is my first MMO game, so I'm still new to this... Please bear with me.

I'm not big on "powergaming", and I'm just here to have fun,
but I am well versed in Ultima lore, and an experienced "single-player" gamer.

I searched for a shard to join, and this one seemed to be the best, so I signed in.
I hope not to be a burden, and that my time spent here will be fun for all involved.

This is a long one, but my sugestions are:

When creating your character, stay clear of the city of Britain. It is very crowded, and full of griefers (thieves, and players that will give you a hard time). Try basing your operations in smaller cities with all the amenities like Vesper, Trinsic or Skara Brae.

1st order of business is to build your char for whatever you want to do. I recomend reading through some of these to better understand what each skill does, and how it interacts with other skills. This is also a good guide of where you can go with your character's template. Most people will say: "Make a Bard", or "Make a Fletcher" to make money, then you can build other skills. That's fair, and good advice if you are a power gamer, but my suggestion to make the game more enjoyable would be: make whatever you want to be, there's plenty of money out there to be made.

2.- Build up stats. Once you have an idea of what you want to do, there are several ways to improve your stats (Strength, Intelligence, and Dexterity), these are the base of your character, and should take priority over skills at the beggining. There are several ways to build them up, some faster, some cheaper. The best price-performance wise is herding. Go to nearest provisioner, or arms vendor and buy a shephards crook. If you're in a small town, you can leave everything you own in the bank, and simply find any rat, cat, dog, bird that is about 2 screen away from the bank, but still inside town, and use the herding skill to make him move to where you want. Mining and camping are two other great ways of improving your stats (I personally have had good success by using a combination of herding and camping). Don't worry if you GM herding, you can always drop it later. This thread, and this second thread have a lot of useful information on how to raise your stats. (If you need help on how to do this, and talk to a person who can explain it easily, look for me on IRC in channel #C^V). For a guide on installing IRC follow this link.

3.- Start working "cheap" skills. Skills like Anatomy, Evaluating Intelligence, Hiding, Stealth, musicianship, provocation, etc. are practically free to get to 100. The guides section, and more specifically this thread and this other thread will provide plenty of info on how to do this.

4.- Never, ever, for any reason visit Britain's Graveyard, unless you are suicidal and want to be killed my multiple pk's (reds, player killers). There are plenty of other graveyards you can go to to gain some money and train.

5.- If you want to go out hunting in the wild, you should be fine, but if you plan on visiting any dungeon, or Britain's Graveyard, or Cyclops Valley in the New Lands, ALWAYS travel as part of a group to be safe.

6.- UO can feel a bit frustrating at the beginning for a new player, but it is filled with rewarding moments as you develop. No matter what you face, don't give up after your first day, keep trying, and you will find out you will enjoy the game enormously.

Thank you for the help. I'll study it carefully. :)
I'll be careful, and take things slowly.

I'll be around here for a long time, hopefully.
Once I've got it all figured out, this should be fun. :D

Well, I guess I should have been more careful... I died.
Oh well, I guess I'll just have to do better next time...

Steps to becoming a King on UOSA...

1) Find a wheat Field, Pick some wheat, grind it in a flour mill, add water, then bake yourself some tasty bread.

2) Become Mildly proficient in a melee skill, slay a bear in the forest, cut some raw meat from the corpse, cook it over a campfire, enjoy a delectable meal.

3) Master the art of weaponry, slay a dragon, skin it for fine leathers, ask a UOSA tailor to craft you some sandals with hides, trot around in new sandals. (don't forget to cook the dragon meat for a sensational feast)

4) Find a man name rj, challenge him to a duel for 100k, slay the knave, cut his body into jerky strips, dig into some salty jerky.

5) Put your winnings towards buying a castle, cause u are now a King.
