About Magic Resistance in this era: effectiveness?

Post by Commodore Axavious »

The T2A wiki lists Resist Spell's mechanics, followed by a short "actual table of raw data" representing damage trends over a 15-Castings period, with variable levels of EI and Resist for the caster/target.

There is a disclaimer below this table, stating that the equation for Resist in use on this shard is slightly different from the one that was in effect at the time of the experiment. My question is... has anyone ever tried to replicate/replace this test on t2a's Test server? I ask because the results listed, I think, are quite shocking.

According to their test, against a caster with 100 EI, a character with GM resist is going to take about 1-5 less damage per spell than a character with a mere 50 resist. That is not all that dramatic. Granted, every HP you save counts, but... doesn't that seem a little low?

I'm messing with character template ideas, and after seeing this data, I'm almost convinced that I could take a hit to Resist in order to free up some skills... because as listed, GM resist doesn't seem *that* much better than 50 resist.

Am I reading this wrong, or is the data particularly disconnected to the state of things here?

Review the Resist Calculator on the '99 Stratics web site.

You will have to go to the Internet Archives to find it. I would be glad to provide the link for the actual web site, but my lovely government agency loves to use a firewall made in China. When you go to the actual link type in "http://uo.stratics.com" and click on the October '99 link in the query results. The left frame is where the resist calculator is located in the old Stratics web site. You can simply find it manually in the list or CTRL+F to find it by typing in the name. There is other information in the magery/resist sections that may be of some benefit to you too.

Or could just use the calculator on UOSA:

I didn't compare them, but I assume they use the same values.
