The Halberd Exploit(s?)

Post by Blackbeard »

I've never played a halberd mage. After reading all around the forums and talking with people about this I read that, currently, it's possible for a person with 25 to 35 dexterity to have their halberd available for a hit every 3 seconds or so if they time it precisely. Not barring the fact that 25-35 dexterity means a halberd swing available every, at least, 4.9 seconds and this doesn't include the equip delay (assuming that they didn't cast a spell and then equip the halberd after the target cursor came up to begin with), this is obviously an exploit.

Is it an accurate exploit?

To define "accurate", I guess you could or could not include the use of programs like Razor into account. If third party software of this type was available back in the day then yes, it is possible that this was an exploit available. If you follow the other definition of what is "accurate", then you'd disagree that you should take Razor into account and say that it's a separate exploit from the in game mechanics by the intrinsic value of the definition behind the words "third party".

E.G.
Accuracy without regards to third party software: The horse stamina thing.
With regards: This apparently.

Is this exploit being worked on for the upcoming PvP patch or is it going to be left in?

On a theoretical note: If it is being removed, would it be entirely possible to still perform the trick after Faust's changes come in regardless?

In a final note, I have to ask: Since you're required to have your hands free to cast spells or meditate, wouldn't the actual targeting portion be considered casting the spell? Thus, you shouldn't be able to hold a weapon when you click on the person you're targeting because it is the completion of the spell casting process.

Is this an accurate trick?

I'd also appreciate it if the general source or date of the trick was given to but if you don't want to go through the effort I'll take your word on it.

Would suggest getting yourself familiarized with the upcoming new swing timer changes.

No, it's the basic way of saying the current system is incorrect and there is no need to discuss it since it's changing soon.

Is this in regards to just the first exploit or do your upcoming changes include the second one I spoke of as well?

If you target a spell with a weapon equipped, it will fizzle. Pretty sure that's what you meant

halberds always were the .. get used to it. thats why this era is very closely tied with the term hallymage or similar term.

A hally mage doesn't stand for shit against a parrymednox dexxer who has a DPed +25 Vanq Kat or Kryss with a para or fireball spell mod on it.

When you start throwing jewlery and pots in the mix it really boils down to skill, timing and maybe a few good rolls for either side.

That is why this era is also closely tied with the term dexmonkey.

Either way I'm glad that the 3 second exploit is being fixed, if that's what's happening.

I would think that jewelry, pots, more-extreme magic weapons (charges) remove some of the skill. Not that it takes no skill to use these things, toss potions, etc...

I never even heard the term dexmonkey until UO:R hit and everyone was upset that a newbie warrior with 70 str and 80 weapon skill could be competitive v. a mage (tank or otherwise).

The whole idea of "tank mage" is rather strange. In era, sure, it was probably the most effective build to play. People were not using charges of reflect/invis like it was candy, (purple)potions were not all that common to use (they cost money!), and resist was a skill in the 60-70 range on most players. Under those conditions a "tank mage" with some magery for level 6 spells and a gm hally could insta-kill people in a combo. That was the strength of the template, the ability to put out a huge amount of damage in a short time span.

Here with GM resist, 50 yellow potions, reflect jewelry, str potions, and easy access to as many magic weapons as you need, the tank mage is a bit toned down. If you could survive the magery dump(s) and heal yourself back up (in era) you were now on the winning side of the battle. I imagine when the timer-changes finally get worked out here, it will no longer be the "tank mage" era that everyone loved.

Isnt that how this era was? Tank mages with quick halby hits? If they want to keep the era accurate why would they change this?

The current swing timer isn't era accurate.
