And: While I don't think automated events were that bad for the shard, I think the standard objection was that the safety of these events is not in the spirit of the shard not that they provided too much silver in the game.

Special one day custom events by staff = not an issue of mechanical accuracy (and something done in era to boot).Telamon wrote:chumbucket wrote: But in all seriousness, silver drops on santa = not era accurate.
Explain the difference

Changing the standard loot on a monster is a matter of era accuracy. Changing the loot for some monsters, for some short period is a staff event, or at least a part of one.
I do think era accuracy can, on a case by case basis, hurt the shard. Hell, if I had my way, this shard would be red tooth in claw, a place where you would scam your own mother so you could make a forum post about it that makes her and her guild quit the shard. And if you had a shard, we'd have bingo in Trammel for pink ninja weapons. But, alas, Derrick has the shard (until the inevitable day when Nevermore leads a coup d'etat, establishing a communist utopia that soon spirals into a fascist state that persecutes Canadians). But the nice thing about the era accuracy policy is that changes aren't made to suit me or you or anyone else. I cried about this a lot before i realized the wisdom of it. So while there'll be no deadly poison casting llamas that give stat loss when they kill you for me, nor neon sandals that spawn gold for you, we'll get by.
Or in other words, the policy has its individual downsides, but it is for the best in the long run.

While I cannot give any specific numbers, I can say that your calculations are way, way off.Telamon wrote:18,427 Silver. Didnt have to win an event, didnt have to sit in a CTF lobby. Just say Santa.
Just an observation about the amount of silver given out today and the amount of Ip's who had logged in by 11pm server time.
Of course not everyone got rewards, and who knows what the pick percentage was or who will cash in trophy's for silver.
Again, you calculations are way off. At the end of July this year, the average number of events held each day was 4. This means that less than 5 silver would need to be handed out during an event to hit your minimum, and no more than 10 would need to be handed out to hit your maximum. These restrictions on numbers were almost always blown out of the water, with most events reaching or exceeding the 10 silver requirement.Telamon wrote:However it should be noted that with automated events, only 15-50 silver was given out per day.
So with 365 days of events, with a low average of 25 silver per day or a high average of 40 per day.
365 Days * 25 Silver(low average) = 9,125 Silver
365 Days * 40 Silver(high average) = 14,600 Silver
So in 1 day, possibly twice as much silver was given out, than was approximately obtainable through automated events in over a year.
Silver is doing exactly what it is intended to do, acting as a reward during special events, which Christmas qualifies as. Also, relative to last year's 'effective' silver count (that is, translated into silver), the amount of silver acquired thus far is less than 2% of what was acquired last year.Telamon wrote:So everyone who thought having silver as a rare spawn on monsters was a bad idea. I would be interested in your thoughts on having 15,000+ silver spawn in 1 day.
This suggestion has already been dealt with. Adding a permanent silver spawn in game is a violation of mechanics, whereas silver spawns on invasion creatures or as a reward for actual events is exactly in line with it's intended use.Telamon wrote:viewtopic.php?f=11&t=33368

When there were automated events, there was an entire group of people who would only log on to participate in the event, obtain their silver, then log until the next event. You could actually track the spikes in population and how they always correlated with events.Telamon wrote:I miss the days when people played here, rather than logging in to obtain holiday items. Anyway good points Chum, i have zero desire to see this in trash talk, just wanted to share my math.
I only wanted to bring attention to the issue that lots of players mentioned that to much silver = horrible bad thing.
Events like santa providing the opportunity to get silver is great for those of us who never participate in events and usually only acquire silver by farming gold or thievery. Its silver inflation, but its not as drastic as you think it is. The cost of silver will only drop a fraction, and the only thing it'll affect is providing more pretty pixels for people who want them.

Re: 819 IP's x 3 Accts = 2457 x 75% Statues = 18427 Silver
While this part is true, the latter is not. The people who solely logged in for events weren't doing so to farm silver, they were doing it b/c they enjoy competitive pvp and chose not to wander the world looking for it. It just so happens to be that those same people, were the ones skilled enough to actually win the events.. The top players really could have given a shit less about the silver, it was just a product of winning.Hicha wrote: When there were automated events, there was an entire group of people who would only log on to participate in the event, obtain their silver, then log until the next event. Even myself of the 5000~ silver I had, only ever actually used it 2 or 3 times, and that was just to get CBD's before they were mass released. All of the rest was given away to friends who enjoy pixel hoarding or sold to fund my pvp & pk operations. I certainly did not attend specifically to "hoard silver". To be honest the only reason I even attended the tournaments was because there's a ladder board in place, and statistics entertain me.

A lot of the people I talked to picked the bells, due to their variety and collectablility. Most of the people choosing trophies were just doing so for the silver. I, myself, chose snow for all of my gifts, because I've been wanting more snow for a while. Now, when I'm bored, I can have snowball fights with myself.Telamon wrote:Of course not everyone got rewards, and who knows what the pick percentage was or who will cash in trophy's for silver.

I'm just saying I think you're over-estimating the number of people who picked the trophy. I'm sure, if you could tally it up, you'd probably find that most people chose the bells.
I think it's worth noting that I haven't talked to anyone who says they chose a christmas tree deed.

1. I believe numbers in this post are way off! I think closer to 40-50 sliver a day.
2. I don't understand a single thing about the post.
3. I wish events would return because I miss ctf and login less without them!
4. I'd still play ctf with or without sliver.
5. wth
6. I believe I may have been drinking slightly.
7. Please return events.
8. <3 you all.
9. Merry Xmas and New Year.
10. because I needed a ten. I just like to state I agree with everything in these posts if it is related to brining back events otherwise I don't agree!
P.s, this post was about events right?:l

I opted for two snow piles myself and a trophy for Nystul that I have no intention of cashing in for silver, along with a few other select trophies I have.
I'm down for a snowball fight any time. I think I'm going to carry one on Blaise permanently. (they are n00bied)
On silver, meh in general. I'm not opposed to more methods of aquisition outside of specific events, but I think it's cooler when it's part of an(y) event.
