Advice on layout for general use hotkeys / targetting?

Post by Campbell »

Hi all,
So I'm looking to get my control scheme down, and am still double-clicking icons of spells and skills and the like, about as green as you please. I'm sure I'd be having a hell of a lot more fun if I had my control scheme setup so that it was somewhat intuitive and that all the quick stuff I want access to (Heal -> Self; Harm -> Nearest Red, etc.) is readily available.

I know that a whole different level of play opens up when one's hotkeys are set up, and I think I'd be having a lot more fun standing and fighting against invading reds rather than recalling out by reflex, so I'm hoping someone would be willing to share advice on details for arranging hotkeys and macros, things that you good people consider to be economical setups. (Mouse wheel up: cast x, target y, etc.)

If anyone just wants to share their spread wholesale, that's welcome too.

For the sake of reference, my build is a pretty standard mage / bard:

Magery
Eval Int
Resist
Meditation
Wrestling
Musicianship
Provocation

Thanks!

I pretty much hotkeyed everything that I use fairly often. I've grouped by keys according to their types. For example one row is for offensive spells, the next for healing/potions, the next is for buffs, the next for arm/disarm & targeting, and the next for whatever also I couldn't fit in the first 4 rows of keys.
I have made a razor profile for each character but try to keep the hotkeys the same on each one, to cut down on confusion, but of course there are some differences like for my tamer.
Some of the things I think you should have on hotkey are;
Use explosion trapped pouch.
Re-sync.
Last Spell,
Targets.
Mini heal, g-heal,
Items you may use like weapons, and magic jewelry.
Well basically I think that in PvP you should not be double clicking anything at all.

Thanks, that sounds something like what I had planned (one row of keys for harmful spells, one for beneficial spells, etc.)
Does anyone have any in-depth advice on setting up targetting hotkeys so that you're hitting exactly what you want every time? Do you manually click someone with "Set Last Target" or whatever and then just wail away when PvPing?

Also, it seems to me that the most economical way to assign hotkeys would be with just the press of a single button vs having to pair it with another, "command" key (i.e. just pressing Q, W, E etc. versus CTRL+Q, CTRL+E). I hear there's a way to toggle a feature that would accomplish this on and off, so that you could type regularly when speaking in game and then toggle to "hotkey mode" to use the keyboard for commands.

Any tips here?

Thanks!

set a hotkey for: Razor -> hotkeys -> enable/disable (first item)
then use single key hotkeys for everything else

I prefer using keyboard gymnastics though. Much easier to talk crap at people while I run away. =P

If you have a thumb button (or two) on your mouse, map that to one of the CTRL/ALT/SHIFT modifiers.

It's an easy way to open up your entire keyboard, as using your hand to hit ctrl-a or shift-x can be rather clunky on the fly. It's personal preference, but I don't like turning my hotkeys on/off.

I also use the mousewheel for targeting purposes. MWUP target lasttarget, MWDown targetself, clicking the wheel is set last target.
