Do reds attack other reds most of the time, or are they all on generally good terms like blues? Is it a huge free for all fest out beyond the range of the guards?

Free for all, all the time unless you know eachother.

I try to keep this honour unless its TG as they will vent in everyone they can the second they see one person regardless of notoriety.
The only reds on the shard you will find that won't attack other reds are those of which that are unguilded.

I'll attack other reds if the time invested in killing them is worth the reward, or the chance that I actually can kill them is above 50%.
