Im sure its possible. A person on Catskills back in OSI days had something of that nature. But, its most likely just the shard lagging.

I really don't see how it is possible but I have run into that situation and sometimes it makes me think otherwise.

I've heard of people using yer ip (gained trough IRC) to ping yer pc over and over to lag yer connection. (Don't know much about this just heard of it being done)

Very unlikely, I'd wager.

It is not uncommon to see patterns where there are none as a way of explaining that is really just a product of chance, e.g., this one guy keeps killing you and so you start to "notice" that you lag up around him, even though in fact you probably lag up around him no more often than anyone or anywhere else. You just don't notice the other lag because you're not looking for any patterns.

That's my guess, but I suppose anything is possible.

Doesn't speedhack/gear do this when the server doesn't allow it to work, or would the lag/jumpiness just be on the side of the person trying to use it?

i have had things happen mainly on OSI where it was always that one same person who would whack me and i couldn't do anything about it. sometimes i'd even watch myself getting drained of health in real time without being able to move, sometimes my character just freezes and i woke up dead without losing conn or anything.

this happened to me a few times on UOSA, the same person involved, where it made me very suspicious and consider that it probably wasn't random lag. seemed like every time i ran into this player when i took him down to a certain percentage i'd end up lagging hard and dead.

my theory is that these people get bored with these games because it's not a challenge to be able to AFK someone then kill em. they'll get a lot of shit and grief for a while, then move on.

I kinda remember something like that happening back on osi. The dOoD invited you to a chat, and then when you joined it booom you lost connectiong cause he ip bombed you.

Back then it was true the ingame chat so the irc is probebly how it would work true now.

As i said its a vague memory only :)

I also remember on OSI ppl were able to make opponents lag by spamming backspace lines.

Malice has a lag machine.

That's the only way he can kill anyone.

I've said it on irc, I'll say it here;

The lack of understanding of the technology that runs this is astounding; you should really understand the networking and how it all functions before you start making assumptions like these. Pingflooding and various attacks were common in era; but we were all on dialup modems and there were numerous direct-attack exploits that could force a disconnection or severe lag. That was 15+ years ago and those days were gone before the growth of cable modem and dsl service. The type of flow you would need to present, is so drastic with a cable modem or dsl, that the chances of ANYONE pulling it off from a local connection are pretty much impossible -- you will get punished by your service provider long before the target even notices you're attacking them.

Now, a Denial of Service attack -- which is what we're talking about here -- is perfectly possible, and it happens round the clock all over the world. The people firing off these attacks, are doing so with literally millions of computers that have been hijacked; they are usually targeting something of interest, and chances of these networks being targeted as desired at specific addresses in relation to a game is pretty unlikely. They are used for ill-gotten purposes, like attempting to attack credit card companies; not trivialities like UO.

That brings us to the next flaw in this little theory; the address. How many of you are on IRC? Are you using the nick registration services to obfuscate your address? If you're not on IRC, how do you propose anyone is getting your IP address?

The answer is really simple, and chum already said it -- so I won't repeat that part. But this notion that someone is somehow knowing exactly when to target a DoS attack at you when you by chance encounter eachother in-game, is just absolutely absurd.
