I have been in possession of a tattered mongbat map for quite some time. Just recently I became curious, wondering if the map would still spawn mongbats. I was up during server wars, and spent my time decoding and digging it up. Just wanted to share it with you all.

I wasn't prepared. These very strong mongbats make the 'normal' strong mongbats found in the lost lands look like wimps. I tried luring them away on an alt, but they would always run back to guard the chest. Energy Vortexes weren't useful. I think next time a dragon or two might be able to handle the mongbat horde. Hmmm.. I wonder if these very strong mongbats might be tameable. They move faster than others, hit faster, and do more damage. The major risk is becoming surrounded by them, it's unlikely you'd be able to cast a teleport to attempt escape.

I didn't get that far before the server shut down to restart. I'll plan better and hopefully tomorrow get to see what is inside.

I finally came prepared. Loot appeared to be standard level 5. A slayer, a blood elemental, and a dread spider spawned while looting.

Not that I saw. I wonder if they didn't originally spawn on one of the very strong mongbats... similar to how one of the brigands in a camp carries a key a locked container inside the tent.

I'd love to know the history of that key. The guy I got it from would NOT let it go. He was selling me dyed furn for 200k when it was worth 500 and wouldn't sell me the key for less than 500k.

I found this quote by chumbucket in another thread. I think this may have some hint of the truth combined with falsehoods.

These chests are the remnants of a successfully completed mongbat map. Mongbat maps are found on every 3000th or so mongbat. When you decode a mongbat map (using the animal lore skill), you will be able to dig up a chest. When this chest appears about 50 very strong mongbats will spawn. Once you kill all of them, you must face the Mongbat Lord. He has the strength of three normal mongbat, and he can casts fireball with enough mana for up to three fireballs. BEWARE! When you kill him, he drops a key. Now, you must take this key to an NPC in Britain named "Hemperor." He can usually be found sitting at the bank. This NPC will give you a new key that can open the chest. Inside the chest you will find another mongbat map.

What chest would he be opening to receive a new mongbat key? That part is a bit unclear.
