At some point in time (2001 or earlier), your vendor did not sell EVERYTHING at 999 gp. There were unique values for each item. For instance, a recall scroll might be worth 27 gp if you don't price it. I'm not sure where the prices came from. Something tells me that perhaps they are the same prices that NPC vendors would sell items for.
Does anyone remember this? I don't recall an era where everything on the vendor was default 999 gp. Perhaps I didn't run a vendor early enough though.

Re: Default vendor prices
I remember it distinctly. It would always seem to be what a vendor would buy the item for, roughly.

Aye, there's another topic on this subject, and it's on the list of "things that really need to be done soon"

Re: Default vendor prices
I can't wait for the VDP change!
Also, I think the default price for player-vendors was the same # that the item id skill would give you when appraising the item.
